D Is For...Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness

Delayed onset muscle soreness is basically the soreness you feel, hours or days after a strenuous work out. It is also called muscle fever.  "The soreness and stiffness comes from eccentric exercise which causes micro-trauma to the muscle fibers." (partial excerpt taken from Wikipedia)

This happens to me after I work out particularly hard or do a workout that I don't usually do.  For instance, I tried the Biggest Loser Cardio Max workout (a few painful weeks ago) and, by the end, thought I was going to drop right there and die, seriously it is crazy hard.  I'm in exceptional pretty good shape but dang that was a wicked hard workout (read I'm not in as good as shape as I thought). Another great example is when I do too much running like a cheetah fast sprinting and by the end of the night I am practically in tears and huddled under the covers of my bed wishing for the sweet relief of sleep. (This is why I don't do too much speed work)

(how I probably look to birds while running)

Have a great day y'all! Thanks so much for stopping by, blessings and hugs!

How are you doing this week?
Any races you did or are training for?
Are you in The A-Z Challenge?
If so how is it going for you?

Godspeed...this comes from the Middle English expression "God spede (you)", a wish for success and fortune for one setting out on an enterprise, voyage, adventure, or travels. It may also mean good luck.

  1. I know I looked like that during my last half. Yes I am doing the challenge & am not really training right now and that feels good.

    Love that line!

when I used to lift, regularly, I'd always be a little sore two days later...not sure why. I never overexerted (at least, I didn't think so), but I'd feel that twinge of soreness.

Strangely enough, I didn't mind it. It told me that I was getting results.

  3. I have found in my case what works the best to delay any muscle cramps or soreness is to delay running. :)

  5. I really enjoyed reading this post! I'm glad to follow :). I have "considered" several times taking up running (even though I am 31). This inspires me!

  6. I have a 10k Sunday, but have been resting after my super-fast 5k last Saturday. I was going to run tonight, but we have a storm coming in and tornado warnings so...Yeah, we'll see :o)

  7. I hate speed work! I wish it was warmer here to get out and do some outdoor training. My first 5K of the season will be the Electric Run on May 31st. I can't wait!

  9. I am not a runner, never had cancer, but am in my 40's and love sports and am not a quitter... I experienced some of the pain you talk of after a game of badminton last week...I am very unfit... but most of all I really enjoyed the positive message in this post - and the positive energy oozing out of the blog. Glad I found you - happy A-zing

  10. I'm doing the A to Z Challenge, I'm not a runner, do lots of walking when I can, I have back issues, but do remember what it feels like to have sore muscles. A massage always works for me!

Love your cartoon, am showing it to friends who run, they will definitely identify with it.

    Have a great weekend -

  11. Shannon, I remember it was your blog that I first heard about the A-Z challenge. This year I decided I couldn't keep up the pace to join again but wishing you and the rest of the participants all the best.
